Oblong cotyledons. Leaves alternate with matted hairs on underside of first 5-7 leaves.
Mature plant
Leaves frequently marked with a smudge. Papery sheath exists where leaves join the stem. Roots, taproot and branched. Often confused with lady's thumb. Smartweed looks similar to wild buckwheat before true leaves emerge.
