Fusarium rot (Fusarium spp.)

Fusarium rot in potatoes

Fusarium rot: biology

Fusarium, as we know it, is one of the most important seed- and soil-borne pathogen in potato. More than 10 species are reported in can infect potatoes in Canada. Fusarium is widely distributed in the soil and is found naturally in almost all soils. The fungus enters the tubers through wounds made during seed cutting, harvest, storage and grading operations. The disease progresses as conditions permit, often in storage – either before planting or after harvest.

Fusarium rot: damage description

Fusarium usually appears as a corky, dry rot that can move into the centre of the tuber. It is usually light brown to black and may have white mould. Rot may become wet due to secondary bacterial rot. Seed planted with Fusarium may have poor vigour and reduced stand and/or stunted plants may be seen as a result.

Fusarium rot: management

Good sanitation, culling practices and proper storage prevent its development. Control with a seed treatment prior to planting and plant during ideal conditions. Different species of Fusarium may have different sensitivities to chemistry so it is important to consider seed treatments that are effective against many species. Pending your buyer, an application of a post-harvest protection product may also be an option for reducing Fusarium.
