US Producers to Trim Canola Area

Like their Canadian counterparts, US farmers intend to cut back on canola in 2025.

Monday’s USDA prospective plantings report showed American producers intend to plant 2.57 million acres of canola this spring. If accurate, that would be down 7% on the year although still the second highest on record behind 2024’s 2.75 million.

Compared with last year, intended planted area is down in five of the seven major canola-producing states, with only Kansas and Washington showing an increase. Planted area in North Dakota, the leading canola-producing state, is seen falling 4% to 2.05 million but still also the second highest on record.

A Statistics Canada acreage report earlier this month pegged new-crop canola planting intentions on this side of the border at 21.646 million acres, down 1.7% from a year earlier. However, actual Canadian canola planted area remains highly uncertain amid trade disruptions. Earlier this month, China slapped a 100% import duty on Canadian canola oil and canola meal, while new US tariffs on Canadian grain and grain products could be imposed as early as Wednesday.
