Manitoba Flood Outlook Little Changed in March

The Manitoba government is continuing to indicate just a low to moderate risk of spring flooding in the province this year.

Released Tuesday by Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre, the main message of the March flood outlook is little changed from February – even amid a weather system that could bring up to 15 cm of snow over the weekend to most central and southern Manitoba basins.

Tuesday’s report said a moderate risk of flooding is in effect for the Assiniboine River main stem from Russell to Brandon, Souris River, Qu'Appelle River and Interlake region (including the Fisher River and Icelandic River).

A low (minor) flood risk is in effect for the Red River, Pembina River, Rat River, Roseau River, Winnipeg River, Saskatchewan River, Churchill River, Carrot River and Swan River, and the Whiteshell Lakes area.

But the province warned that things can still change. Spring flood risk is largely dependent on weather conditions from now until the spring melt and throughout the spring, said a provincial release.
