The federal government on Thursday announced nearly $97 million in funding to help producers adopt the latest clean technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay made the announcement on a Nova Scotia dairy farm that received almost $50,000 in government funding to purchase and install a solar energy system to replace electricity from the grid.
“Canadian farmers fully understand the need to take care of the environment and they are constantly innovating to find new solutions to reduce their emissions,” MacAulay said.
In all, the funding announced today under the Agricultural Clean Technology (ACT) Program will support 162 projects across the country, including more efficient grain dryers, precision agricultural technologies, and electric heating systems.
The ACT Program provides farmers and agri-businesses funding to help develop and adopt the latest clean technologies to reduce GHG emissions and boost their long-term competitiveness, said a government release. The funding is focused on three priority areas: green energy and energy efficiency, precision agriculture; and bioeconomy solutions.
To date, 414 projects have been announced under the ACT Program, totalling up to almost $197 million.
